Brushes and combs

Techniques and brushes appropriate for each type of hair:

Short hair: These are divided into thick (Rottweiler, Terriers, etc.) and fine (Boxer, Doberman, Dogo, etc). Rubber, natural hair, or carding brushes are used. Brush in all directions until the dead hair is gone. Then we use a fine comb (fine, close-together teeth) for the finish, always brushing in the direction of the hair.

Normal-length hair: These are intermediate-length coats, semi-long (German shepherd, Golden, Beauceron, etc). In these cases, carding brushes and picks are used in all directions to take out the hair underneath. For the final touches, a comb with intermediate teeth (fine, separated teeth) is used.

Long hair:These are divided into straight hair (Cocker, Bearded Collie) and long, curly hair (Bichón Frisé, Poodle). They need to be brushed often, beginning underneath and going up little by little, which allows all of the hair to be brushed.
With long, straight hair, a metallic or carding brush is used. For tangled hair there are special combs on the market with turning teeth that offer less resistance.
The finish is done with a natural bristle brush, to give it shine. For long, curly hair, a carding brush is used, finishing with a comb with separated teeth (not too fine), always combing in the direction that the hair grows.

Thick hair: This includes Nordic breeds (Samoyedo, Husky) or thick coats (Chow-chow, Saint Bernard, Pyrenean mountain dog). Picks with long, conical metal or plastic teeth are used to pull out the sub-coat or somewhat long and dense hair underneath.

Brushing cats: Combs with turning teeth are always used, since they slide through tangles better.

If your dog is aggressive with you, put a basket-type muzzle on it. We recommend this type of muzzle because it allows animals to open their mouths and to breathe well. It shouldn’t be too small, pressure the snout, or make it hard for the dog to breathe.
